Low Temperature Performance: NCM Battery VS Lifepo4 Battery

It is best not to charge lithium batteries in winter. This is mainly because the charged lithium ions on the surface of the negative electrode are easily deactivated at low temperatures to generate dendritic lithium crystals, which directly pierce the diaphragm. It will cause a short-circuit of the battery and affect the life and performance. In severe cases, it will cause an explosion.

So which one of the current low temperature performance of ternary lithium battery or lithiumironphosphate battery is better?

Ternary Lithium Battery (NCM)

The ternary battery is a newenergy battery that has just been released in recent years, and is mainly used as a power battery, that is, the energy source of new energy vehicles. As a starting battery, there is still a certain risk, because its low temperature stability and high temperature resistance are not as good as traditional lead-acid batteries.

However, the low-temperature performance of ternary lithium batteries is significantly higher than that of lithium iron phosphate batteries. The lower limit of the low temperature temperature of the ternary battery is -30℃, and the low temperature discharge performance is good. Under the same low temperature conditions as the lithium iron phosphate battery, the mileage attenuation in winter is less than 15%.

Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery (Lifepo4)

Different composition materials have different low-temperature performance of lithium batteries. The low-temperature performance of lithium iron phosphate, which is now recognized as having higher safety performance, is the worst. The lower temperature limit is -20℃, and the capacity retention rate is different under different #lowtemperature environments. The capacity retention rate at 0°C is about 60-70%, at -10°C it is 40-55%, and at -20°C it is 20-40%.
